The fall of Assad

Sent to the Boston Globe December 9,, 2024:

Dear Editor:

There's an unappreciated factor as the free world celebrates the fall of Bashir Assad, that brutal dictator with the blood of hundreds of thousands on his hands: the decimation by Israel of Iran's most prominent terror proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas, along with Israel's brilliant destruction of the Islamic Republic's air defenses. This was all done in the face of strong resistance from experts in charge of our American foreign policy.

We can be sure the international community will never acknowledge the debt owed to Israel, but our government should start taking to heart the way, time and again, Israeli actions taken despite American opposition have proven to be good not just for Israel but for America; equally important, time and again Israeli inaction in deference to American pressure has proven to be a tragic mistake.

It's time to recognize that Israel understands the Middle East, the region in which it exists, far better than the so-called "experts" in the State Department who have repeatedly made a mess of things.

Sincerely,

Alan Stein
